Inspecteur Netjes

10 July 2010

These previous two comics of this here strip Captain August have been my homage to one of the real Dutch jewels: Inspecteur Netjes by comic legend Hanco Kolk (Mannetje & Mannetje, Gilles de Geus, Meccano), drawn in his typical abstract line art which I couldn’t reproduce if I tried.

Inspecteur Netjes was a humorous one-page detective comic that ran for years and years in the Sjors & Sjimmie magazine. In it, the titular detective Netjes (loosely inspired by Dutch television show Baantjer) would always arrive on the scene of the crime, interrogate suspects and solve the mystery of the murder. The reader was encouraged to study the comic because hints were hidden everywhere in the panels and dialogue. The solution was given at the end of the magazine in a separate bar, where Netjes would explain exactly what had happened.

Trying to guess along was a real treat, as the murders and hints were often ingenious. The comic had some recurring elements that I tried putting in the homage as well. The black bars of narration for example, the exact wording of the intro, the inspector asking the reader directly if they knew who was the murderer and many other little details.

It was unexpectedly exciting to make this. I loved tying it into the August universe!
